Guayaquil’s new airport is a model of cleanliness and spacious modernity. However, spacious modernity means hard metal benches, shiny marble floors and sleek, but hard surfaces, everywhere. – the Dynamo

GYE Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport.

What to Expect

The facilities at Guayaquil Airport (code: GYE) are housed in a single-terminal building with domestic and international departures. The airport features a selection of airside and landside shops, restaurants, and services and the staff are described as warm and welcoming. Several eateries remain open 24 hours a day, and free WiFi is available. For additional comfort, while you wait, passengers can purchase entry into one of the airport lounges, with one of them featuring showers.

Sleeping in Guayaquil Airport

guayaquil airport guideAirport staff are generally tolerant of overnight sleepers, and there are reports that travellers may be able to borrow pillows. The airport is described as safe, clean, and relatively quiet, with lots of seating, including armrest-free furniture conducive to stretching out and reports of comfortable couches in the arrivals area. The terminal can get chilly, so bring extra clothes, layers or a travel blanket. For uninterrupted sleep, several hotels (some with shuttle service) are nearby. See locations in the Airport Hotels section below or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.
