BKK Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.
What to Expect
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (code: BKK) is the largest of the two airports in Bangkok and serves as the primary international airport. It is a relatively modern and new building with architecture that reminds visitors of a giant space station. The airport has only one terminal – one of the biggest terminals in the world – making navigation a bit confusing (particularly when it comes to finding bathrooms!).
Amenities-wise, the airport doesn’t have as much going on as some of its regional airport neighbours. Still, you will find free WiFi (but only for one hour!), and several first-class lounges – some of which also have showers – that economy-class passengers can pay to access.
Sleeping in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is a sleep-friendly airport that attracts plenty of overnighters. It has a decent amount of armrest-free seating, some located in private, quieter spots. Here are a few sleep spots that travellers have reported:
- Floor 3 has some quiet corners because there are few shops here.
- The Observation Deck on Floor 7 is a quiet area where staff and travellers rest on the few benches and charge up at the power outlets.
- The Basement has a few quiet spots that fill up quickly. Check out the area between Doors 7-10, the seats by 7-Eleven and Subway, and underneath the staircases (though the floor is cold, so bring an extra layer).
For uninterrupted sleep, there are sleep boxes, a transit hotel inside the airport, and other nearby hotels connected by shuttles. See Airport Hotels in the guide below.
Read the latest traveller reviews for more tips. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Guide.
Good to Know
- Travellers should exercise caution in the arrivals hall as there have been reports of scams and petty theft in that area.
To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can write a review and submit airport tips and photos.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
Airport Hours
The airport is open 24 hours.
Rest & Relaxation Zones
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport does not offer designated rest zones but you may find some reclining scattered around the concourses. In the past there were some airside in Concourses B and D (west side).

Drinking Water
A reader tells us water fountains are available: There are now water bottle refill machines in the airport! We happened to have our water quality checker on us and it was a little above 100. You’re not supposed to drink water above 100 but since this is just barely beyond the safe range my teenagers chose to refill their water bottles anyway and no one got sick. If you have a hardy stomach this seems like a great option! (February 2024)
Food & Drinks
When you get the midnight munchies or give up trying to sleep and need a coffee to stay awake, 24-hour food concessions are available. Travellers recommend the 24-hour food court, located on the landside, on the Ground Floor of the Transportation Waiting Area. It’s a cash-only, locals-only sort of place, and you’ll need to buy paper coupons first, but the food is cheap and good.
Luggage Storage & Lockers
Location: Left Luggage Baggage Service Center, Level 2, Arrival Hall, Baggage Claim • Level 4, Departure Hall, behind the check-in counter (Row P). Rates: vary according to the luggage size, but rates start at THB 100 / bag per day.
Mobile Charging
Charge your electronics for free at mobile charging stations conveniently located throughout the airport.
Showers
Freshen up (and loosen those stiff muscles) with a shower before your flight, though you’ll have to pay to access them. Locations:
- Miracle Transit Hotel, Concourse G, Floor 3 East; Miracle CIP
- First Class Lounges, International Terminal (see Lounges above)
WiFi / Internet
Free WiFi is available at Suvarnabhumi Airport for up to one hour daily. Connect to one of the following networks: @ Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT”.
At one point, there were 126 internet kiosks with free internet access. Users could only connect for 15 minutes at a time, and once their time expired, they had to log in again. We could not confirm this at the time of our 2023 September update. If you know whether they are still there, click here to update our guide.
Security & Safety
At the time of this update, we have no reports from travellers commenting on safety issues at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. However, sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s essential to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:
- Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
- Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
- Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Please don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who awoke without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
- Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay sharp, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
Pro-tip: If you sleep in the public zone, don’t be surprised if you receive an early morning wake-up call. Security is known to make the rounds, waking people up as travellers arrive for morning flights.

In September 2016, a reader told us there is a 24-hour food court (Landside, Ground Floor, inside the ground transportation waiting area). The reader continues to say, “It is a cash-only coupon food court (where you exchange your cash for paper coupons to buy food and drinks with, and exchange back any unused ones when you leave). There are maybe 15 food stalls with every major category of Thai food. Prices mostly range 40-100 baht, with drinks starting at 10 baht for bottled water. It’s not the most sanitary place in the world, about typical for Thai food courts, though. It’s mostly frequented by staff, I’ve noticed, and there is a staff-only escalator right in front of it. It’s possible to go back up to both departures or arrivals from there, but you’ll have to walk about 300 meters to a public access escalator. I think it’s sort of an open secret of sorts.”
Hotels – see “Airport Hotels” above.
Information Desk – Have any questions? At one point, there were a total of 15 information desks to assist passengers in the following locations: Arrivals and Departures Areas. Another reader says, “One smoking area is directly outside the departure hall (floor 4), on the west end, a short walk from indoors. There is another directly below this one and a third below that and slightly further to the west.” (July 2023)
