BLR Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Bangalore Bengaluru Kempegowda Airport (Code: BLR).
What to Expect
Bangalore Airport (code: BLR) consists of two terminals. Terminal 1 should only handle domestic flights, while the newly built Terminal 2 should operate all international flights. However, one of our readers reported that these changes have still not been implemented, so double-check which terminal your flight departs from before heading to the airport. Both terminals feature a broad selection of dining options, shops, and duty-free shopping. Some airside dining offers 24-hour service, while the WiFi may be your only saving grace to help pass the time, even though some readers reported it’s quite slow. For additional comforts, economy-class passengers can pay to access one of the airport’s private lounges. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for locations and rates.
Sleeping in Bangalore Airport
The airport is open 24 hours, so it is possible to stay overnight. If you have an early morning flight out of the city, biding your time at the airport might be best. It’s not the most comfortable experience, but it is cheaper and easier than getting a nearby hotel. According to traveller reviews, there tend to be other passengers sleeping overnight. One of our readers reported that you will need a physical boarding pass to move between terminals.
Locations & Seating
Visitors are only allowed in the Airside area a few hours before their flights, so you will most likely have to sleep Landside.
- Landside – In Terminal 1, your best bet is to head to the Arrival foyer, where you will find some metal poolside deck-style seats. According to a reader, these are in high demand, but you should be able to get one if you wait a while. This area also has regular seats with armrests but no power outlets.
- Airside – In Terminal 1, head to the upper level, which seems best for airport sleepers. Some metal-armed rowed chairs were also spotted on the ground floor.
If you’re looking for uninterrupted sleep, there are sleep cabins and a transit hotel directly inside the airport’s secure zone. See Airport Hotels in the guide below.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have reviews on the newly built Terminal 2. To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can write a review and submit airport tips and photos. You can also visit the airport’s website for current information. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Bangalore Airport Guide.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security. For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.

Airport Conditions
If you plan to spend the night at the airport, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Temperature – Some readers said the airport can get quite chilly at night. Arrive prepared, just in case. It’s better to have a blanket than to need one later on. Even a hoodie provides extra warmth if the terminal gets colder.
- Lighting – A few travellers have reported that airport lights are quite bright and stay on all night. Come prepared with eyeshades or something else to cover your eyes, such as a shirt or towel.
- Noise – A reader reported, “Constant noise from the upcoming arrivals.” Earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones will help if you’re trying to sleep overnight.
Safety & Security
One of our readers said the airport “Is largely safe, but (it) doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on your belongings.” (February, 2020). Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:
- Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
- Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
- Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
- Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
