"Slept in New Orleans train station after staying in New Orleans as I had a train at 7am and the hostel was filthy so thought I would take my chances (dont EVER stay in the hostelling international hostel as it was horrible - for USA standards that is...!)It is also no longer an international hostel There was me (single female) and 4 guys and the 2 security guys came along at 11pm and checked our tickets and then we could sleep on the floor. The cockroaches were present but not too bad and the place was very safe as you could wander outside into the train area (enclosed and locked) and all the other doors were locked up. There was some homeless guys early on banging on the door but the security guys chased them away. All in all a comfortable night."
