To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Puerto Vallarta International Airport.

What to expect

Puerto Vallarta Airport (code: PVR) consists of a small terminal with almost two dozen eateries and shops located on both the airside and landside. WiFi is available to help pass the time.  For added comfort, economy class passengers can pay to use the airport’s first class lounge. See Airport Lounges in the guide below.

Sleeping in Puerto Vallarta Airport

There are reportedly few seats located near the gates and security staff are known for preventing people from sitting too long in the few seats in the arrivals area. In previous years reviewers cautioned against sleeping in this airport due to safety concerns. For uninterrupted sleep, there are hotels near the airport. Good to Know

Reviewers have reported that security at this airport can be brusk and intensive, and that tour guides and taxi drivers aggressively pursue business from arriving passengers.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. ATMs / Cash Machines – Need cash? ATMs are available 24 hours a day. Machines are operated by BBVA (Bancomer), Banorte, HSBC and Scotiabank. Fees may apply, so be sure to check your bank’s fee schedule and your daily withdrawal limit if you are travelling internationally. You may also want to notify your bank of your travel plans. Locations: in the Domestic Arrivals area.

Currency Exchange – Globo Cambio currency exchange service Hours: 7:00AM – 10:30PM. Three locations: Landside, Airside and Domestic Arrivals.

Duty Free & Shopping – Dufry offers Duty Free shopping at 2 locations. Hours: 8:00AM – 11:00PM. In addition, a small variety of shops (10) are available both airside and landside, with most operating from 7:00AM – 10:00PM.

Food & Drinks – There are 10 restaurants/cafes available at the airport. Food concessions throughout the airport operate on varying schedules, with some open as early as 6:00AM. At the time of this update, there are no 24-hour dining options.

Information Desk – Not available.

Luggage Storage & Lockers – Not available.

Showers – Showers ($) are available in the VIP Lounge Puerto Vallarta International Lounge. See Airport Lounges above.

SIM Cards – A reader tells us “there is an OXO convenience store across the parking lot which you can see when standing in front of the airport. SIM cards can be purchased there.” (October 2022)

Tax Refund – Yvesam. Location: Terminal 1, Landside, Mezzanine area. Hours: 9:00AM – 9:00PM.

Travel Agencies – If you are arriving in Puerto Vallarta and need local arrangements or help planning a really last minute trip abroad, there are a couple of travel agencies with offices at the airport that  can probably be of assistance. Apple Vacations (8:00AM – 10:00PM) and Miller Travel Service (10:00AM – 6:00PM) are both located in Terminal 1, International Departures.

transportationAirport Transportation: Getting To/From The Airport

Buses

Travel like the locals do! If your load is light and you’re on a tight budget, you can take a city bus from the airport for just a few pesos. There is a bus stop outside and to the left of the airport terminal, located underneath the pedestrian overpass. Take any of the buses marked “Zona Romantica” or “Centro”. If you need a bus to the main bus station, walk across the pedestrian overpass to reach the bus stop located on the opposite side.

Hotel Shuttles

At the time of this update we were unable to find any hotels offering airport shuttle service.  See also Airport Hotels above.

Taxis

Prepaid taxis are readily available for hire in the ground transportation area. After clearing customs, ignore all of the timeshare touts and stop at the official taxi booth in the main atrium to pay for your ride. You will receive a ticket to give to your taxi driver before boarding the taxi.
