Some hints:

Starbucks in Terminal 2 has nice sofas which are available all night. Light there is a bit bright and there is some music on, but in general you can have a good rest there.

Best alternative would be the middle floor in terminal 2, next to the Forum 205/206. There is a good space underneath the coat-hangers: quiet, peaceful, dimly lit but still save, no music. Sometimes there is a guy with his dog crushing there, but he's friendly.
Toilets are nearby and also a police office. Otherwise there is only few staff passing.

Many people also spend the night on the upper floor of the shopping-area, near the car rentals. Chairs there are not so comfy and the music can be pretty annoying. Wouldn't do that.

In Check-in 2 you also have a nice, rather quiet area near row 10 in the far corner.

Police and security staff are friendly and leave overnight guest pretty much to their selves if they are peaceful. You can feel save, but not threatened.

"Arrived here from Berlin intending to travel on to Lausanne by train.

Got lost twice getting from arrivals gate to exit, there are signs (mainly in German and French) but they're in confusing places with ambiguous directions and the signs in German send you in a different direction from the signs in French.

It's very difficult buying a train ticket, it's not clear where to do so, there were no instructions. There were 3 counters all with long queues but nothing to tell you whether they are selling train tickets.

I eventually found the ticket machines (not near the counters), they offer a bewildering selection of ticket types but no explanation of the types.

There's no airport staff to ask.

Before leaving Berlin, I had found from the The Swiss train website

(http://www.sbb.ch/) that the fare into Zurich was SFR 5, so I experimented until I found a ticket to Zurich for that price, travelled into the main station and rebooked."
