What to Expect

Vientiane Airport (code: VTE) has two small connected terminals, an international terminal and a brand new domestic terminal, which opened in 2018. Facilities include a few food stalls and shops, mostly on the landside. WiFi may be available inside an airport lounge, which economy class passengers can pay to enter. Sleeping in Vientiane Airport

We do not yet have any sleep-related airport reviews.  For uninterrupted sleep, a hotel is just opposite the airport. Other nearby hotels offer shuttle service. See our Airport Hotels section below for more info or read some traveller airport reviews for more tips.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. ATMs / Cash Machines – Need cash? ATMs are available. Fees may apply, so be sure to check your bank’s fee schedule and your daily withdrawal limit if you are travelling internationally. You may also want to notify your bank of your travel plans. Locations: unknown.

Currency Exchange – Currency exchange counters are available at the airport. Location: unknown.

Food & Drinks – Dining options at Vientiane airport are limited. The options include, a café and a buffet-style restaurant. Location: 3rd Floor.

Luggage Storage & Lockers – Not available.

Mobile Charging – A reader tells us it is “possible to charge phones almost everywhere inside the airport for free, but you may need an adapter. No USB plugs as far as I’ve seen”. (January 2020)

Shopping – Duty Free is available as well as a few other small shops.

Showers – Not available.

transportationAirport Transportation: Getting To/From The Airport

Bus

If traveling light and on a tight budget, you can take a public bus from the airport to the city center. Buses pass along the main road, about 500m from the airport terminal. To reach the airport from the city, take Bus 30 from the central bus terminal, which departs in 30 minute intervals.

Car Rental

Cars are available to rent from rental companies located onsite. Further information is unavailable at the time of this update.

Hotel Shuttles

At the time of this update we were unable to find any hotels that provided an airport shuttle.  See also Airport Hotels above.

Taxis

Prepaid taxis are readily available for hire in the ground transportation area. Stop at the taxi booth in the Arrivals hall to pay for your ride. You will receive a ticket to give to your taxi driver before boarding the taxi. “Tuk tuks” (auto-rickshaws) are also available, and require your best bargaining skills for a fair price.

Ride Sharing

A reader sent us this tip: “For transportation options to the airport, please also include LOCA LAO app… it’s Vientiene’s version of Uber or Grab. Less than 50000kip from city centre. “
