As a foreign passenger sleeping over in the airport I found that I was treated with curiosity rather than being questioned. – Sean26

BKI Airport Overview

kota kinabalu airport guideTo help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

What to Expect

Kota Kinabalu Airport (Code: BKI) has two separate terminals, and a drive connecting them takes a few minutes. The larger, recently built Terminal 1 handles most traffic. Terminal 2 is older, serving charter flights and low-cost carriers.

Your experience varies on your terminal, but you’ll find a few eateries, shops, and free WiFi.  Bathrooms can be dirty, so bring tissues and hand sanitizer.  For added comfort while you wait, there are a few lounges that even have showers. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for location and access information.

Sleeping in Kota Kinabalu Airport

Overnight campers generally have no issue here, particularly in Terminal 1. Look for benches and armrest-free seats on the ground floor and by the KFC upstairs. Travellers report that the upper floor is warmer and quieter, and the ground floor is cooler but busier. Bring earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones and an eye mask to combat noise and bright lights. For uninterrupted sleep, a hotel in Terminal 1 rents 40 sleep capsules by the hour. Otherwise, nearby hotels offer complimentary shuttle service. See our Airport Hotels section below for locations, or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos. You can also visit the airport’s website for current information.  For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Kota Kinabalu Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.
